Online Wagering Attack in Italy 12 Mar 2006 There are so many different online wagering sites to choose from on the web. With so many, how does one decide which one to play at? Italy is trying to help their residents by forcing them to choose an Italian-based wagering site. Italy is continuing to wage a mini-war on the online wagering industry by asking internet service providers to filter out website traffic. Their hope is to have Italian wagering fans play on Italy-based online casino sites. Several online wagering sites have stated that Italy will be going against five major European Union rulings by blocking access to EU-based sites. Italy's crackdown on the online wagering industry is almost forcing Italian players to play strictly on Italian sites thereby preventing EU-based sites from entering the gambling market. Last year alone the 1.8 million Italian online wagering fans helped casinos generate over $1.4 billion. This alone is enticing the Italian government to keep their players patriotic to wagering sites that pay taxes to Italy. Italy is now awaiting approval for proposed legislation which will fine internet service providers up to $215,000 for non-compliance regarding filtering of online wagering sites. The proposal has led to opposition from the European Betting Association and the Remote Gambling Association. Both organizations represent the interest of major EU-based online wagering operators. | |||||||||||||||
